Art of Exploration

HumankindТs innate need to create, to explore, to discover and to communicate begins in childhood. The Art of Exploration uses the motivating examples of explorers and creators to ignite that questing spirit in young people and to model the ways in which we can all reach beyond the ordinary to experience the extraordinary.

The Art of Exploration is a program developed with Imagination Celebration of Fort Worth, Texas and implemented in the Fort Worth Public School system and in Monterrey, Mexico, reaching over 2,500 school children each year. The program includes teacher training, the creation of supplementary curriculum materials, guest presenters including explorers, scientists, artists and creators, interactive workshops, exhibits, and performances.

The Art of Exploration is a unique, multi-disciplinary program that connects the arts, sciences and humanities while at the same time connecting the classroom to art and cultural institutions.

In 2005 Milbry Polk and Ginger Head created The Art of Exploration Program bringing together the scientists and explorers associated with WINGS with the artists and programs of Imagination Celebration of Fort Worth, Texas, an award winning program Ms. Head created 20 years ago. The program lasts for several days three to four times a years introducing young people through lectures, performances and workshops to people who are expanding knowledge and creativity. During the first two years 25,000 children in Texas and Mexico participated in the program.

VISION
The Art of Exploration introduces young people to inspiring explorers and creators who will spark their desire to reach their potential. To explore and understand the world we live in has been the motivating force for the growth of human culture. The Art of Exploration utilizes the examples of individuals to ignite that questing spirit in young people to reach beyond the ordinary to experience the extraordinary. Individuals and programs have been selected in the thematic categories of Earth, Sea, Air and Space, Humanity and Creativity. Experiences for students, teachers and the general audience combine special sessions with individual explorers and hands on experiences in the arts, humanities and sciences which are relative to the work of each explorer.

GOAL
To create a program that opens young people to the wonders of the world through the discoveries and creations of explorers and artists; a program that will be easily transferable to any part of the world.

COMPONENTS
The Art of Exploration includes teacher training; creation of supplementary curriculum material; guest presenters including artists, creators, scientists; interactive workshops; exhibits, films, performing arts programs, exhibitions of related student works; classroom resources including books, films and student тАЬImaginotesтА?, and trading cards on each explorer; and projects in, reading, technology, journaling, history, story telling, theatrical presentations, inventions, and art works connected to the programs in which students participate. The Art of Exploration program is also offered to the public through special events, lectures, film series and exhibitions.
